Ideally this test is fast and represents a minimally painful experience.

This test will give information about the body’s response to sugar (glucose).

• It requires a first (baseline) blood draw.
• After this, you will drink a sugary drink and then, you will have three more blood draws after 30, 60, and 120 minutes.
• The total amount of blood to be extracted will not exceed 20 ccs, which does not constitute a risk for health.

In 3 visits, at months 0, 12, and 18.

This assessment will give information about the amount and distribution of body fat and the calcium content of the bones. It consists of a whole body X-ray.

• It takes about 10 minutes, does not need previous preparation and is painless.
• The radiation produced is minimal, about 6-10 times less than a chest X-ray.
• You will have to remove any piercing or jewellery.

In 3 visits, at months 0, 12, and 18.

This assessment will give information about the amount and distribution of visceral (within the abdominal cavity), subcutaneous fat (under the skin) and liver fat.

• It takes about 20 minutes and does not need prior preparation.
• You will have to remove any piercing or jewellery.
• You must remain still throughout the imaging process.
• It is painless; however, the MRI machine can be narrow and noisy (you may be given headphones or earplugs).
• No radiation is produced.
